Welcome to Toad

Toad is a multi-platform database query tool built for anyone who needs to access data, understand data relationships, and quickly produce reports.

With Toad, you can:

Toad provides a full-featured Database Explorer, Query Builder, and Editor for the following databases:

Most companies have additional databases that they need to connect to and query. To help achieve this, Toad provides basic connectivity, querying, and reporting functionality using the Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, and ODBC providers. The inclusion of these additional providers should address the reporting requirements for most companies.

The purpose of the ODBC provider is to offer basic connection and querying capabilities to any database that supports an ODBC 3.0 or later driver. For a list of databases tested with the ODBC provider, see the System Requirements section in these Release Notes. This form of connectivity allows connections to databases such as Netezza, IBM iSeries, Ingres, and Vertica. Because this form of connectivity is generic, it is not full-featured and may not be as robust as the fully-exploited providers for the other databases.

New in This Release

Toad for Data Analysts - Premium Edition

Toad for Data Analysts Premium Edition provides all the functionality of the Professional Edition and includes expanded connectivity by allowing you create connections to non-traditional data sources. The new Quest Data Services allows you to connect to Cloud and business intelligence layer data sources and to query these sources just as you would a traditional, relational database source.

The Toad for Data Analysts Premium Edition introduces Quest Data Services which allows you to connect to non-traditional data sources, for example Cloud and business intelligence data sources. In TDA 3.1, Quest Data Services supports the following non-traditional sources:

Toad's Quest Data Services premium connections provide Query Builder, Editor, Object Explorer, Database Explorer (Viewer), and Data Reporting functionality, among others. Use these Toad tools to view, query, transform, and report on your data.

For all of your Quest Data Services connections, Toad analyzes the tables (or dimensions or queries) and maps them to tables in Toad. You can add or remove tables from the table map at any time.

Stay tuned for new Quest Data Services connection offerings in future releases.

Known Issue

Defect ID

General Sybase ASE

Currently, opening a Toad file in TDA 3.0 or later that contains a connection to Sybase ASE and was saved in TDA 2.7 (or earlier) results in an error message. The following workaround is for a Query Builder file, but a similar method can be used for any Toad file.

Workaround 1:

  1. If you receive an error message, close the message pop-up. You will see that your Toad Query Builder document is open in an Editor window. Send this document to the Query Builder (Editor | Send to Query Builder).
  2. Save the new Query Builder document as a new Toad file.

Workaround 2:

  1. Open the Toad file in Notepad.
  2. Use Find and Replace to change all instances of "sybase" (all lowercase) to "Sybase" (first character uppercase, with the rest lowercase).
N/A
Excel If an Excel file is open in Toad, you cannot open the same file in a separate Excel instance. To review this and other limitations when using Excel in the Web Browser, see "Considerations When Using the WebBrowser Control" at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304662. ST42486

Installation/

Upgrade

All

(MSI installs on Windows Vista and 7) If you are using MSI to install Toad on Windows Vista or 7 with UAC enabled, you can install a file that adds a "Run as administrator" option when right-clicking the MSI file:

http://www.symantec.com/connect/downloads/msi-run-administrator-context-menu-vista

N/A

Toad for Data Analysts does not support installation paths that contain UNICODE characters.

N/A

Toad for Data Analysts 3.0 or later doesn’t support User IDs that contain Unicode characters. ST90367, ST90372
The Toad for Data Analysts Read Only installation is read-only for all databases, with the exception of MySQL. If you are using a Read Only installation of Toad for Data Analysts, you will be able to modify a MySQL (and only MySQL) database. N/A

Currently, you cannot install Toad for Data Analysts to a path that contains non-English characters. By default, Toad for Data Analysts installs IBM DB2 merge modules as part of the standard installation process. These merge modules only support English characters.

Workaround (Stand-alone installation):

In the Destination Folder page of the installer, only use a destination directory that contains English characters

Workaround (Toad Bundle installation):
In the Product Selection page of the Quest Installer, only use a destination directory that contains English characters for Toad for Data Analysts.

Startup

All

(Windows Vista on Toad client only) If you initially start Toad when logged in as a standard user and enter a license key, the license key should be saved to:

C:\Program Files\Quest Software\Toad for Data Analysts 3.1

However, a standard user does not have write privileges in Vista to C:\Program Files so the key is saved to the following directory instead: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Quest Software\Toad for Data Analysts 3.1.

If you later start Toad as an administrator, you are prompted to enter the key again because it is not in the C:\Program Files directory.

N/A

DB2

(Windows Vista on Toad client only) From the Client Configuration Wizard, when exporting the DB2 catalog profile as a standard user, the profile should be saved to:

C:\Program Files\Quest Software\Toad for Data Analysts 3.1

However, a standard user does not have write privileges in Vista to C:\Program Files so the catalog profile is saved to the following directory instead:

C:\Users\db2admin\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Quest Software\Toad for Data Analysts 3.1

N/A

Connections

ODBC

Currently, Toad does not support ODBC connections to the following databases:

  • Sybase Advantage

  • Oracle RDB

  • Progress OpenEdge

  • MySQL ODBC (The ODBC 3.51.17.0 driver is not supported, and attempting to connect using this driver results in columns not displaying for tables.)

    Workaround:

Upgrade the MySQL ODBC driver to 3.51.27.00 or later to display table columns.

ST69744

Access

Currently, for a password-protected Access database, selecting Save password in the Connection Properties dialog does not preserve the password for the next Toad session.

Workaround:

  1. To open a password-protected Access connection, right-click the connection in the Navigation manager and select Properties.
  2. Select the Advanced tab and enter the password.
  3. Select the Save password checkbox and click Connect.

Note: This will allow you to connect to the database and save the password for this session of Toad. Repeat the procedure if you re-launch Toad.

ST94125
Automation All

Toad includes significant enhancements to Automation that affect attributes in the actual automation script. If you open an automation script from a previous version, such as Toad for Data Analysts 2.7, a message informs you that the script will be upgraded so it will work in the current version of Toad.

Caution: If you upgrade this script, it will no longer be compatible with previous versions of Toad. However, a backup copy of your script will be saved in the Automation\BAK folder in the Application Data Directory under Help | About.

N/A
All

If Toad for Data Analysts 3.1 is launched as administrator on Windows 7/Vista systems with UAC turned on and Outlook running, the auto-populate SMTP server info and contact list in Automation Email and Error Emails does not function properly.

Workaround:

Submit this information manually. Another option is to either run Toad for Data Analysts 3.1 not as administrator, or turn UAC off, or close Outlook when adding the Send Email activity in Automation.

All Currently, in Automation you cannot use a period (.) in a date/time format string when customizing the date/time suffix for a file name. ST97217

Access

Running an automation script on an Access connection that requires a password or user name causes Toad to hang.

Workaround:

  1. Right-click the Access connection in the Navigation Manager and select Properties.

  2. Select the Save password checkbox and click Save.

  3. Save any open files, and then close and restart Toad.

  4. Open the automation script and re-execute it.

ODBC - Ingress

In some cases, earlier Ingress ODBC drivers display an "Invalid number of columns or parameters specified" error message when displaying data that has Unicode characters.

Workaround:
Download the latest Ingres 9.3 ODBC driver.

N/A

Data Compare

Excel 2007

Currently, you cannot compare an Excel 2007 file if it is already connected in the Navigation Manager in Toad for Data Analysts. If the connection already exists, an error states that the file is in use because Data Compare uses a ODBC to connect to this file.

Workaround:
Disconnect the Excel 2007 file from the Navigation Manager and then select the file as a connection in the Data Compare wizard.

N/A

Execution Plan SQL Server

You cannot generate an estimated execution plan for a local temporary table because the execution plan uses a different connection to generate the plan and does not know about the temp table.

Workaround:
Use the actual execution plan button to generate execution plans for SQL that contains a temp table.

Query/
Query Builder

All

The Query Builder currently uses a 24-hour format for timestamps. Attempting to run a query with a date range that includes a 12-hour timestamp format results in incorrect formatting of the timestamp. ST78729

ODBC - Teradata

Heterogeneous (cross-connection) queries between a Teradata table and an Access or Oracle table result in the following error, if there is a Where Condition on the Teradata table's DATE column: "[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] ODBC--connection to 'InfoDB' failed."

Workaround:
Use the Global Where Clause editor to wrap the column on the left hand side of the Where condition in a CVDATE function so the value is cast into the correct format.

ST55378

Oracle

In the TDA Base edition, when creating a heterogeneous (cross-connection) query, there are limitations when using the following ODBC drivers:

  • Microsoft ODBC Oracle Driver—BLOB, CLOB, Timestamp, and Interval data types cannot be retrieved.

  • Oracle ODBC Driver—Timestamp with time zones, Timestamp with local time zones, and Interval day to second data types cannot be retrieved.

ST70733

Local Storage Currently, in a cross-connection query using Local Storage, Toad does not support quoted table alias names (example, the table alias "foo bar"). Quoted column names are supported. ST86483

Version Control

All

If you migrate settings when upgrading Toad, you may have to reconfigure the repository setting in version control if a "Failed to open the settings for module VersionControl reverting to defaults" error displays.

Workaround:
To reconfigure the repository, select Tools | Options | Version Control | Defaults and select the previous repository in the Version control folder field. Your previous project settings are applied.

N/A

In previous releases, the method Toad used to generate the script was different than the current method. After upgrading Toad, a message may display stating that objects or files in version control are different than the local version. If your local version is current, you should check the objects and files into version control.

N/A

If the version control buttons do not fit on the toolbar, any buttons that do not display cannot be clicked because they disappear as soon as the cursors moves close to them.
