Toad for Oracle provides an intuitive and efficient way for database professionals of all skill and experience levels to perform their jobs with an overall improvement in workflow effectiveness and productivity. With Toad for Oracle you can:
The Toad for Oracle solutions are built for you, by you. Over 10 years of development and feedback from various communities like Toad World have made it the most powerful and functional tool available. With an installed-base of over two million, Toad for Oracle continues to be the “de-facto” standard tool for database development and administration.
All commercial versions of Toad are bundled with additional Quest products, based upon the Edition that you purchased. For more information about the latest features in your Toad Edition and the bundled products, see the Toad Editions Release Notes.
Review the following sections for new features in this release.
A note about menu icons and toolbar buttons:
An artist was employed to update a substantial portion of Toad's main menu, toolbar buttons, and Editor icons. Further work will continue in Toad to enhance more icons throughout the product. The familiar placement of buttons and icons will allow you to quickly grow accustomed to the updated images.
For 11.6, the new user guide, the installation guide, and release notes have been translated into Korean, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese. You can download these translated documents on our award-winning Support Site.
The new "Guide to Using Toad for Oracle 11.6," includes the original "Beginner's Guide" content, updated for 11.6, plus two additional chapters: "Toad Without Code" and "Toad and Your Code." It is shipped with the 11.6.1 patch and is available for download on Toad World.
Visit the Toad World library to download both of these new documents:

Once more, click Allow to let Toad for Oracle connect with your Dropbox account.
On the Remote Script Execution page:
Enter database information or select it from the grid (not shown).
Select an uploaded script or enter an ad hoc query on the Query tab, such as:select * from all_users
.
Your client Toad does not have to be running to execute scripts remotely, but MyToadMonitor.exe does.
You can execute scripts using your mobile device.
In Toad:
On your mobile device:
Users with an iOS device such as iPhone or iPad will be able to add MyToad to their Home screens via Safari.
You can sync files with a Dropbox account.
Go to View | Toad Options | Online | Enable user files syncing
Benefits:
- Each copy of Toad you have can be set up to use a single set of application data files.
- Backup - Dropbox provides a secure, online storage mechanism.
- Versioning - Dropbox automatically versions every file stored in it. You can roll back to an earlier version of a data file.
By uploading scripts you think would be useful to the community of Toad Oracle professionals, you can be part of this worldwide script library.
You can also:
- Comment on scripts
- Rate them
- Bookmark your favorites
- Organize them into collections.
- Discover the popularity of scripts by seeing the number of downloads, and their number of Likes and Dislikes.
You can also log in by going to View | Toad Options | Online | Toad World.
The Open window contains existing files.
- Type your file name and description.
- Choose the Type (Script, Document, or Other).
- Select a Collection to add it to (or create a new one); optional.
- Click the ellipsis button next to File Tags to select related tags and click OK.
- Enter a Description.
- Click Save to upload your file to the Repository.
You can manage your Toad World Repository login in Options (View | Toad Options | Online).
Toad now supports the IFILE directive within TNS Names files. The IFILE directive allows you to link to an external TNS Names file and dynamically include its contents along with the contents of your local TNS Names list. You can include TNS files up to three levels deep in order to organize and manage TNS entries within your company.
The new Compare to menu item lets you easily access this feature.
You can compare one tab to another tab, or one tab to a file on disk.
You can also use the Control-key/click/drag method from one tab onto another that has always been available.
You can now edit search-and-replace macros via the right-click menu in Editor. This advanced macro editor lets you reconfigure any macro, rename it, remove it, and create new macros. Copy/paste is supported. You can also copy/paste your macros and email them.
- Table Filter has a new option to exclude Object tables. When selected, this could make the SB load noticeably faster for some users.
- The RHS Data tab is now read only if you don't have UPDATE privilege on the table, view or MView.
You can now specify version of the target database, so scripts generated from a higher DB version can run in a lower DB version.
You have this option in:
The new database type option lets you optimize SQL without using hints
Right-click a SQL statement in the Editor and select Optimize | Auto Optimize SQL
The following features now support Oracle databases running on Amazon RDS:
Note: Some of the features listed are only available with the DB Admin Module.
Toad now supports IBM Rational ClearCase for version control.
Note: Toad has been tested with ClearCase Version 7.1 for Windows. ClearTool command line is required. A working client view, mapped to the project VOB, must be set up the client computer before using in Toad.
Toad now supports mapping to multiple Work Directories (as available with Team Foundation Server) on the new Workspace tab of the Team Foundation Server Login Dialog. Versions of Toad prior to 11.6 only permitted a single Work Directory (client folder mapping) for a Workspace.
To help you find answers quickly, a link to the Knowledge Base of our award-winning Support team has been added to many error messages.
- Quest Support has a new policy regarding the submission of Support Bundles inside the product. An existing Case or Service Request ID is now required. This information is prompted for now when clicking the 'Email Quest Support' label on the Support Bundle form.
- We have added a link to Quest Web Support on the Support Bundle page.
Toad for Oracle's 64-bit version now lets you connect using 64-bit Oracle clients.
Toad 11.6 introduces a secure, Internet-free Toad installation with a restrictive parameter used when installing Toad silently. The "i" parameter of the RESTRICTIONS option ensures Toad does not access the Internet. This prevents the use of all functionality which could do so, such as the FTP window and opening Browser windows through Toad.
Refer to the "Toad for Oracle 11.6 Installation Guide" for instructions. Visit the Toad for Oracle library for that and many other resources.
Code Analysis (formerly CodeXpert) is Toad's powerful code review and analysis tool. It helps you ensure that the performance, maintainability, and reliability of code meets and exceeds your company’s best practice standards.
Code Analysis has the following new features:
Ignore Rules
You can also access the "Ignore Rules" option by right-clicking on rule violations in the Messages tab at the bottom of the Editor window.
You can choose to:
- Ignore this instance
- Ignore all instances in this window
- Ignore all instances.
To restore a rule to full service:
Click a row to select it.
Legend (checkboxes are read-only indicators):
Updated UI
On the Code Analysis toolbar, the 'Analyze Code' and 'Scan SQL statements...' buttons have been replaced by a drop-down list to apply to selected items:
- Run Review
- Run SQL Scan
- Run Review and SQL Scan.
Make your selection and press F9, or click 'Analyze Code for all selected items' on the toolbar .
Or to apply your selection to all items, press F5.
Run (F9), Run all (F5), and Cancel have been updated.
The new graphic icon legend makes it easier to see rule types/objectives at a glance.
Edited rules are now indicated by a checked box in the User Defined column.
Modified rules are now indicated by a checked box in the Modified column.
To reset user-defined or edited rules to their original values, select the rule and click the 'Restore Original Rule Value' button, or click the double-arrow 'Restore All Original Rule Values' button. These buttons replace the right-click functionality for restoring rules.
When editing Rule Sets, it is easier to identify read-only rules sets.
Toad's standard rule sets cannot be edited.
Your new rule set will appear with the Read Only checkbox unselected.
The 'Export Rule Set' and the 'Edit Rule Set' buttons become available when you select your new rule set.
- The Edit Code Analysis Rules toolbar now includes import and export buttons to import existing or export user-defined rules.
- See "Create, Clone, or Edit Code Analysis Rules" in the online help for more information.
- The import and export of rule sets has been updated.
- See "Create or Edit Rule Sets" in the online help for more information.
You can now perform a full Code Analysis directly from the Project Manager, using your default rule set, via the right-click menu.
The following Code Analysis Rules have been improved:
Rule 2118 (Avoid DDLs other than Truncate, Exchange/Split partition): Did flag procedures/functions. |
Rule 2829 (Avoid declaring NUMBER subtypes which have no precision [INTEGER etc.], and avoid declaring NUMBER without precision): Adding DEC. The data types which cannot have a precision or scale have been removed. |
Rule 4213 (Use CASE statement rather than a complex conditional IF statement): The smallest "complex" statement is now IF-ELSIF-ELSE-END rather than IF-ELSIF-END. |
Rule 4409 (Ensure END [LOOP] statement is not missing a semi-colon): Has become a pink rule (with XPath expression). |
Rule 4602 (Avoid use of literals in non-declarative parts of the program): Adding all numeric literals except 0, 1 and -1. |
Rule 4801 (Use EXIT WHEN rather than IF THEN EXIT): The rule states that EXIT WHEN is ok, but plain EXIT is not. Formerly EXIT_WHEN was caught as well. |
Rule 4804 (Avoid use of EXIT/RETURN statements in a FOR/WHILE loop): EXIT is now allowed in an endless loop. |
Rule 4809 (A loop that contains DML statements should be refactored to use BULK COLLECT and FORALL): Not flagging SELECT if no DML statements are found. XPath expression updated. |
Rule 4810 (Ensure that FORALL statements rely on a driving array that is not empty): This rule has been removed as an empty driving array does not cause trouble. |
(Rule 4811 has been removed.) |
Rule 4812 - (SELECT-BULK-COLLECT [implicit bulk query] or FETCH-BULK-COLLECT...): XPath expression updated. |
Rule 5002 (Avoid assigning strings of zero length to character-type variables ): Removing hitting parameters because that's allowed in many cases, see topic text. |
Rule 5406 (Remove unused parameters or modify code to use the parameter): False positive on cursor parameter declarations, such as "cursor c_test(v_test integer) is ...". Excluding procedure, function and cursor specifications. Changed to XPath based. |
Rule 5825 (Consider replacing INSERT/UPDATE or UPDATE/INSERT pairs working on the same table by a MERGE): Now flags more cases. Did not look within a same block hence false positives. |
Rule 5914 (Use untransformed column values in the WHERE clause): Adding anonymous block context. The rule has been refined to limit the transformations to TO_NUMBER() and SUBSTR() only. Perhaps a few others can be added later. |
Rule 5917 (Do not use 'Insert into ... select * ...' statements) : Did not filter on "SELECT *", rather flagged all selects. |
Rule 6401 (Avoid multiple declarations of labels and variables): XPath updated to find procedure and function declarations. Changed to XPath based. |
Rule 6801 (Ensure all statements can be reached [dead code]): Now supports full Oracle syntax (formerly only Oracle up to 9.2 was supported). Fixed for correctness. |
Rule 6806 (Use native execution for PL/SQL that is compute intensive and has little SQL) : Now triggers whenever the total count of non-DML statements is greater than 30 times the number of DML statements. The legacy code has been replaced by a new XPath expression which will trigger whenever the total count of non-DML statements is greater than 30 times the number of DML statements. This can serve as a starter, and can be refined later. |
Project Lucy is now launched as an embedded Toad window, and the UI has been updated.
- Your token is now stored in the new Online section of Toad Options (View | Toad Options | Online)
- You can launch Project Lucy from the Database Browser toolbar or click Database | Diagnose | Project Lucy.
See "Project Lucy" in the online help for more information.

If you check "Indexes" on the Scripts tab for snapshots, then the primary key for the snapshot will be included in the script, even though the CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW statement implicitly creates this primary key. Toad currently does not differentiate between indexes created explicitly on the snapshot and indexes created automatically when the snapshot is created. Workaround: If you are running the generated script to recreate the snapshot, then you can simply ignore the error that occurs when the script tries to recreate the primary key index for the snapshot. If you do not normally create indexes on snapshots, then you can uncheck "Indexes" when generating the snapshot script. |

Import/Export | Constraint scripts from Export DDL do not contain the "using index" or "tablespace" clause. | ST59228 |
Schema Browser |
Sometimes on Oracle 8.1.7 or higher, after pressing "Compile invalid objects", you may get ORA-20000, ORA-06512, or ORA-06512 errors. This could mean that you do not have the privileges to compile the object, but it also happens when the schema contains a package body that does not have an associated spec. Workaround: Look in the schema that you are trying to compile to see whether there are any orphan package bodies. If it is your own schema, then do:select * from user_objects o1 where object_type = ''PACKAGE BODY'' and not exists (select ''x'' from user_objects o2 where o2.object_name = o1.object_name and o2.object_type = ''PACKAGE'') Then drop any orphan package bodies that are found. |

Schema Browser |
For data in tables, changing the order of the columns in the "View/edit query" popup does not change the order of the columns in the grid. Renaming a column in the "View/edit query" popup moves the renamed column one position to the left. The renamed column will not be editable. Workaround: Use drag-and-drop in the grid to change the column order. |

In RAC databases, version 10.1.0.3 (and possibly other 10.1 versions), the query used to populate the "Current Statement" in the Session Browser fails with the following error: Runtime error occurred: 12801 (ORA-12801: error signaled in parallel query server PZ99, instance <instance name> ORA-01008: not all variables bound) This problem does not occur in Non-RAC environments. Workaround: Clear the "Use RAC Views" checkbox, and log into the appropriate instance of the database, if necessary. |

Unicode |
The following features in Toad do not support Unicode:
In addition, Java itself does not allow Unicode class names or file names. This is relevant to the Java Manager, Editor, and Schema Browser. |

Unicode | Connections to Service Names with Unicode Characters are not supported. | N/A |
Unicode |
The Editor does not fully handle Unicode words, and as a result highlight object names, CTRL + Click, and mousing over watch hints may not work. Workaround: The fix is to change a regular expression in the PL/SQL language parser. New installations will not have this issue, but the language parser is not applied for upgrading users (so you do not lose any language parser customizations). If you are upgrading, you need to modify the PL/SQL language parser and add "?r)" (without quotes) to the beginning of the “Any name" parser rule’s expression if you want full Unicode object name support. For detailed instructions, please see the Unicode Troubleshooting topic in the Help file. |

Upgrades for Toad install side-by-side with any previous versions you have installed. You can run the new and previous versions concurrently. The first time you run the new version of Toad you are asked to migrate previous settings files.
Note: Toad supports importing settings only if the new version is within two releases of the previous version. If your versions are more than two releases apart, you need to install an intermediate version to successfully import the files.
This feature has been deprecated:
Before installing Toad, ensure your system meets the following minimum hardware and software requirements:
Memory |
1 GB RAM required for 32-bit 2 GB RAM required for 64-bit Note: The memory required may vary based on the following:

IPv6 | Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) is being adopted by the US Federal Government and industries around the world. In its most basic format, the new protocol uses 128-bit addresses instead of 32-bit addresses used by the current IPv4 to route packets over the Internet. Toad for Oracle features such as FTP access the Internet through third-party vendors such as /nSoftware's IP*Works that are IPv6 compliant. For access to Web sites by way of the Toad Online window, Toad simply invokes the user-defined or default Web browser. | ||||
Additional Software |
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or later (to view the Release Notes) Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 or later (to view the Installation Guide) |
Before installing Toad, review the following for virtualization support:

This section does not replace the materials about supported platforms and configurations found elsewhere in the product documentation.
This release is Unicode-enabled and supports any character set. In this release, all product components should be configured to use the same or compatible character encodings and should be installed to use the same local and regional options. This release is targeted to support operations in the following regions: North America, Western Europe and Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, Far-East Asia, Japan.
This release has the following known capabilities or limitations: Toad is a Unicode application. As such, it has native support for any Oracle Unicode character set, such as UTF8 or AL32UTF8. There are some features in Toad which use or invoke Oracle Utilities or applications which are not themselves Unicode applications. Their functionality is therefore limited to the character set of the client on which Toad is running, and NLS_LANG must be carefully set to match the Windows character set.
We have also observed issues with US7ASCII when used with non-Latin characters.
The Toad release package contains the following products:
Toad for Oracle 11.6.1
Note: Toad is available in different editions. The release package includes the edition that you purchased.
