Get to Know 9.6

Missed 9.5? Read about that here

Introduction

The release of Toad® for Oracle 9.6 brings an array of new features, allowing more empowerment to its users. The purpose of this site is to bring forth the latest improvements and to help the user discover the features. We would also like to mention the release notes and the Help documentation which is also a great tool for learning Toad. However, we do acknowledge the customer's anticipation of the product in which the 'Get to Know' page provides a quick walk-through of the innovative features introduced in Toad® for Oracle 9.6.

Note: This tutorial /walk-through was written using Toad BETA release version 9.6.0.25

Installer Updates

Toad® for Oracle 9.6 has now updated the StartUp wizard when Toad is first launched.

The Schema Browser allows many options to choose your Visual Style from dropdown, single line of tabs, multi-line of tabs, or treeview style. Also there is a check box now to include icons for object types on the tabs.

StartUp options include:

  • Allow multiple copies of Toad to be loaded
  • Show login window at startup
  • What window to open on new connection
  • Confirm before closing Toad
  • Toolbar/Docking panel visual style
  • Play Toad wave (ribbit) at startup

Another option that is set at startup is "Saving source files dialog box". This makes it easy to add, edit and remove your favorite folders.

    Additional StartUp options are:

  • Auto commit
  • Threaded Queries
  • Use separate session when Toad is doing Explain Plan
  • Use read-only queries
  • Use DBA views if the connected schema has access to them
  • Save passwords for Oracle connections
  • What to do when ending a session (i.e. Commit, Rollback, Prompt for commit/rollback

TNS Names Editor Updates

The TNS editor in the connection screen has been re-worked in 9.6 to allow more robust functionality of adding, deleting and editing your entries. We have added minimize and maximize capabilities to the TNS Names Editor and the ability to select the address tab when clicking Edit on a Host address

We've also included the ability to display parent nodes in the preview window. This is especially helpful in RAC server setups

    Other features:

  • Support to save the size and state when closing
  • Supports a clone TNS Address entry within the Add/Edit Service window
  • Supports SQLNET, BEQ and SPX protocols

The New AWR Browser

Much like the Statspack Browser in look and feel, the AWR (Automatic Workload Repository) Browser monitors database performance metrics, by way of useful graphs and charts. Data is represented by a user-determined range of DB snapshots.

Code Insight Updates

As you may remember from Toad for Oracle 9.5, Code Insight (<ctrl><.> from the editor) allows you to quickly browse and select tables in the editor. Now in 9.6, Code Insight has the ability to see the following object types:

  • tables
  • views
  • aliases
  • functions
  • procedures
  • packages (with methods)
  • types (with attributes and methods)
  • java source
  • sequences
  • users
  • public synonyms

Code Insight can now be initiated by <ctrl><.> and <ctrl><t> (<ctrl><.> for wildcarding , <ctrl><t> to list all, <shift><tab> to auto fill)

Furthermore, Code Insight keeps a cached list of objects for two or more connections to the same schema, and shares information between them. Any child nodes of an object will be displayed when ‘.’ is used after the insight window has been opened.

New options are available in View | Options | Editor | Code Assist, which allow you to filter out objects by type.

New Flashback Archives (11g)

New to 11g is the Flashback Archive. Below are the newly added components in Toad for Flashback Archiving.

Note: Oracle 11g and Toad DB Admin module required.

  • Flashback Archives tab has been added to the Schema Browser
  • A Create/Alter Flashback Archive window has been added to support database script and compare Schema
  • Other windows added: Tables Scripts, Schema Compare, Create/Alter table windows

Database Browser Updates

The Database Browser has been improved to allow more use of the Schema Browser. Nodes have been added for Database object levels (Tablespace, Synonyms, User Roles, and so on). Clicking the Schema Objects node expands all the schema objects within the embedded Schema Browser. This new feature will allow users--especially DBAs--to view their database in full.

Profiler Analysis updates

Improvements have been added to the Profiler Analysis to give the user more flexibility and depth in analyzing code. From the Line Item Profiler, we have added a Details button to take you directly to the DBMS Profiler Analysis pane. Also, selecting a line item will now automatically open the referenced SQL source and line.

Listed below are the Features added to the Profiler Analysis:

  • To the toolbar:
    • Hierarchical Tree View (replaces the "drill down" view)
    • Expand all and Collapse all buttons
  • Profiles displayed are consistent with line item analysis
  • Selecting a line item automatically opens the referenced SQL source and line
  • Can rotate the Bar Graph

Integration

Further integration of Quest Code Tester for Oracle and Toad Data Modeler 3.1 has been a noteworthy part of the 9.6 release. Quest Code Tester can be launched from the External Tools button, or by right-clicking the Schema Browser (if a PL/SQL object has existing tests in the QCTO Repository).

With Toad Data Modeler, a button has been added to launch TDM 3.1 for saved Toad ER Diagrams. (This will perform a database connection and automatically initiate the Reverse Engineering process to create a new Physical Data Model).

Inside TDM 3.1, you will see 5 main integration areas:

  • File -> Open Toad project
  • Utilizing Toad connections
  • Object Palette
  • Import Toad for Oracle ERD
  • Select Toad icons

Read Only Toolbars

Toad 9.6 also includes a redesign of the Toolbars. Right-clicking on the bar now gives you more immediate control for customization. "Lock Toolbar" and "Restore Defaults" options have been added to the right-click menu. If you are migrating from 9.5 to 9.6, your current customizations will be imported. This keeps Toad consistent with other Windows applications, with toolbars always customizable and featuring only one toolbar layer.

SQL Recall Updates

The SAVEDSQL.xml files have been migrated to SAVEDSQL.dat files to improve performance using a new loading and saving technology. SQL Recall statements are now stored in \User Files\SAVEDSQL.dat.

Database Health Check Updates:

A new category of "Vulnerability Assessment" has been added to Heath Check. This component adds 23 new checks which verify susceptibility in your database. The "DROP SYNONYM" statements have also been added to Health Check items that list synonyms pointing to nonexistent objects.

Oracle Tuning Advisor Updates

The Oracle Tuning Advisor has been redesigned with the following changes:

  • There is a tab for configuring the Auto SQL tuning task (Oracle 11g only). The new window is under Database | Optimize | Oracle Tuning Advisor
  • A dialog now appears before the tuning task is created
  • You can view the results on this screen for the current and past tuning tasks. If you have 10gR2 or newer, the script (if any) is available and can be run from this screen
  • A new window has been created where you can view, create, and delete tuning tasks

Import Table Data Wizard

Import Table Data Wizard has been redesigned with the following changes:

  • The Import Table Data Wizard has been converted to an action, which means a few changes:
  • The "Execute Wizard" button is gone; all of the steps are built into the main window
  • The "Clear wizard settings" button is gone; it's no longer needed
  • The truncate /disable /enable options still exist in their manual forms on the first step, but they've also been added as automatic pre- and post-import items on the last step
  • The save/ load specifications buttons are gone. They are no longer needed since you can now just save the action
  • If you right-click a table, view, or snapshot from the Schema Browser to launch the Import Wizard, all settings from the last time you imported to that object are remembered, assuming the action was saved or is still in the vault

Miscellaneous Features

  • ADDM/AWR: Added tab for Baseline Templates (11g)
  • Scheduler Button: Added to the following screens: Data Copy, Database Compare, Database Health Check, Generate Schema Script, Generate Database Script, HTML Schema Doc Generator, Reports Manager, Schema Compare
  • Logging In: If password is expired but within grace period, a dialog will appear saying "Password will expire within n days. Do you want to change your password?"
  • Toad Group Policy Manager: Added Schema Lock - prevents users from seeing other schemas in Schema Browser
  • Object Palette: Much faster now when lots of objects are involved. Also, Quick Filter and Project Manager Filter features from Schema Browser have been added
  • Schema Browser-Packages, Procedures, Functions : As cursor moves around in RHS source tab, the corresponding node in the LHS will become selected
  • Schema Browser: The "Configure Browser Tabs" dialog has been improved. The "Visible" column is now a checkbox, the buttons have been turned into toolbar buttons, and a "Default" button has been added (to restore default tab order - tabbed mode only). Also "Load" and "Save" buttons have been added, so you can save configurations and quickly recall them later
  • DBA Module: The DBA Module name has now changed. This is now called the DB Admin Module. This new name better reflects the module's capacity to assist anyone performing database administration rather than necessarily assuming you must be an actual DBA
  • ASM Manager: Create/Alter Disk Group window supports new 11g parameters: Allocation Unit Size, ASM Compatibility, RDBMS Compatibility and Disk Repair Time
  • Tablespaces: New column on Space tab, "Used Pct of Max", shows percent used with respect to max size including auto extend. New columns on Files tab, "Reclaimable MB" and "Min MB"
  • Single Object Compare: A "columns only" checkbox has been added, and under it an "alphabetical" checkbox. This can be handy when comparing objects of different types, and all you care about is columns. It applies only to tables, views, and materialized views
